Want Trophy Trout? Ring The Bells!

07. 24. 15

On May 18th, 1997, four anglers waited patiently for the next Lake Trout to strike one of their four downrigger rods. The anglers were fishing in 140 feet of water off the Calf Island shoal in the eastern end of Lake Ontario. Henderson Harbor was the base for the “Spring Classic” derby and these fishermen had come in hope of tangling with a Laker that would put them in the money.  [Read More]

6-Step System For Canada Geese

07. 01. 15

SWP canada Geese

The low honk of a goose and the drawn-out whine of a gander could be heard in the distance. The sky was beginning to get pink and out of the south west we could see the silhouettes of forming skeins of Canadas as they rose from their watery roosts and headed inland for some free, early morning groceries. Hunters blew their short reed “Blackfoots” as the first family groups locked to the song and began their long approach. [Read More]

Tip On Setting Up Shotguns

06. 24. 15

Gun shops are like a candy store for sportsmen.  We dream about the new shooting iron we’ll take to the field this fall.  We can’t wait to try it out and we often expect that it will dramatically increase our proficiency as shooters.  Unfortunately, this is rarely the case.  There is an old saying: “Beware the man that shoots one gun”!  [Read More]

Black River Bay “Walleye Bonanza”?

01. 30. 15

When fishermen think of Lake Ontario, it conjures images of tackle busting Salmon and Trout. When a Chinook slams a spoon trolled at high speed “Hang On”! Most freshwater anglers have never seen a (30 lb. plus) fish rip 100yds. of line on the strike. While this is an entirely captivating situation, Walleye anglers should brace themselves for what is potentially the best trophy Walleye hot spot in the lower 48.  The eastern basin of Lake Ontario is home to this burgeoning population of Marble Eyes but the hottest spot of all is Black River Bay. The time to be there is the month of May. Walleye use shallow water expanses along the eastern end to spawn during the spring of the year. When May arrives they begin a two-month journey, which will lead them to many of the deep-water hunts where they will hold for much of the summer. The struggle to replenish energies lost through spawning lead the Walleye to the dinner plate every spring and this willingness to feed is an advantage for anglers looking to lock up with a huge Walleye. There are two distinct fisheries that exist in Black River Bay during the spring of the year. We call one “The inside fishery” and the other “The outside fishery”. Lets examine the inside fishery first.

Finding the Big Browns of Early Spring

01. 30. 15

Huge Browns patrol a variety of water in the spring of the year. They reach their enormous size by eating a healthy diet of Alewives and Smelt. When this traditional food source is not available you will find them eating everything from Sculpin to Perch. Weather, geography and hydrology all work together to concentrate bait sources. When bait sources collide with Brown Trout activation temperatures – Look Out! Action can be fast.
